Interesting Property

I do like property with a history, especially in Scotland. This one is no exception. Brechin Castle in Brechin is currently available if you have a spare £3m and can cope with the cost of keeping it in order.

Current Position

Certainly way out of my budget, however, I can still appreciate a great property that is steeped in history. Brechin Castle was put up for sale by the current owner the 17th Earl of Dalhousie. The estate has been in the family for over 250 years. The entire estate is not being sold just part of it.

In fairness, the property has been on market for some time, since 2019. I suspect that it is not the£3m asking price putting off able purchasers but likely the costs associated with the upkeep of the property. They have not been disclosed but they will be significant.

History of Brechin Castle

The current house is not the original. Initially built for the Scottish Kings in the 13th century as a fortress. It is said that Edward 1st was held off by the occupants during the War of Independence in 1303.

The current house was reconstructed around 1701 which is also when the walled gardens were established. Part of the original castle still exists.

The Property

The Castle itself has 16 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms and includes 70 acres of land. Within the grounds, there are 5 cottages which are either used for staff or let out.

The walled garden is surely going to cost quite a bit to maintain and no doubt will require constant attention from at least one if not two gardeners that will be required on a full-time basis.

There is also the benefit of fishing rights on the River South Esk.

Clearly, the length of time it has been on the market means there is likely a lot more to consider as you would expect than just being a family home. The current listing can be seen here on Rightmove.

More history on the property can be found on Wikipedia.
